Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) are the smartest way to add value, generate rental income, or create independent living space for family members on your existing property. With recent changes to California zoning laws making it easier than ever to build, EG Construction specializes in designing and building custom ADUs and garage conversions.
Building an ADU is essentially building a miniature custom home. It requires its own foundation, framing, plumbing, electrical, kitchen, and bathroom. Because the footprint is small, efficiency in design and construction is paramount. We handle the entire process from trenching the utility lines to the main house, to the final coat of paint.
Whether you are converting an old detached garage into a studio apartment or building a brand new 1,200 sq ft two-bedroom unit in your backyard, we ensure the structure meets all city codes and matches the aesthetic of your primary residence.
We build all types of accessory dwelling units:
The most challenging aspect of ADU construction is utility management. The new unit needs water, sewer, and power. We carefully trench your yard to connect the ADU sewer line to your existing main line. We also coordinate with Edison or PG&E to either upgrade your main electrical panel or install a completely separate meter for the ADU, allowing you to easily split utilities for renters.
A standalone structure in the backyard. This offers the most privacy for renters or family members and can usually be built up to 1,200 square feet depending on the city.
Converting an existing garage is often the most cost-effective route, as the foundation and framing are already in place, requiring mostly insulation, drywall, and utility work.
Built as an extension to your existing home but featuring a separate entrance, kitchen, and bathroom. Great for aging parents or adult children.
A unit under 500 square feet created entirely within the existing walls of a single-family home, often utilizing a spare bedroom and adding an efficiency kitchen.
We start by reviewing the property, the intended ADU use, and the site conditions that affect planning, utilities, and construction.
We help define the remodel scope, including structural work, cabinetry, counters, plumbing, and electrical to reduce surprises.
Before demolition, we protect surrounding areas, set up dust control, and remove the existing kitchen carefully.
This phase includes framing, structural changes, plumbing, electrical, and drywall prep for finishes.
Cabinets, counters, backsplash, flooring, fixtures, lighting, and appliances are installed with attention to detail.
